Well, I'm off for the week-end

That's more or less it for me this week. I'm off to Trondheim in just a few hours together with my girlfriend.

Arriving in Trondheim sometime after midnight tonight doesn't leave much time for socializing. But tomorrow there'll be the grand introduction of me as the boyfriend to her parents (I've seen both of them briefly, and met her father as the boyfriend already). Starting to get the good ol' butterflies now.
Later on Friday it's dinner and whisky at a friend's (who's a teetotaller) house with him and a few other friends.

On Saturday we'll be driving on to Hitra to have the grand introduction of the girlfriend to my family. Being the last outpost of land before the United States of America there's not much to do, but I don't think we'll be bored...

And sometime on Sunday it's time for a 8 hour drive back to Oslo.

A summary of the events over the week-end can be found on this page, or on Robin's (depending on who manages to get at it first), late Sunday night (or sometime during Monday).

Too much going on

I apoligize for the lack of entries as of late. But there has just been too much happening, and will be happening for me to have time to write much. Just to mention a few things, The Norwegian Wine Expo is on the way here in Oslo, there is a board-meeting with the Malt Whisky Society tonight. Thursday afternoon will see me and Robin off to Trondheim and on to Hitra on Saturday. Last Saturday we went to a small party which saw us arriving back home around 4-ish, and on Sunday morning (1pm) we were at the Wine Expo.

And yes, my cellphone seems to have gone awol, or perhaps it's just stolen. I've had the number blocked. I don't think the possibillity for misuse is that high, since it was almost out of power, it's a obsolete model (Motorola) were the recharger costs more than a new phone...

Wassup...

1. When was the last time you laughed?
That would be last night, spending time with my girlfriend...

2. Who was the last person you had an argument with?
That would be a co-worker about the mess I make. I like it a bit messy.

3. Who was the last person you emailed?
That would be my girlfriend, when I sent over the travelitinerary for our trip to Trondheim in October.

4. When was the last time you bathed?
I went for a swim a few weeks ago in Arvika, took a shower this morning but the last time I sat in a tub is years ago.

5. What was the last thing you ate?
That was a piece of white bread with chilli&garlic spread and oriental salami.

She's crazy

Just so you al know it, my girlfriend is a certified madwoman. I'm in the shop answering a customers questions, sensing no danger, when in comes a guy with some flowers in his hands, not an all to uncommon sight. But then he asks for me by name, a more rare occurrence. And he procedes to hand the flowers, 3 long-stemmed red roses, to ME! Those who know know that I'm seldom lsot for word, but this left me standing flabbergasted with my mouth hanging open. I eventually get around to opening the card attatched, and they're from Robin (well I sort of suspected that)...

Mad, wonderful, insane, lovely woman!

Viral attack

Once again the papers are filled with warnings on a major computer cirus attack. And once again the virus infects thousands computers whose owners seem to have learned nothing from the hundreds of times theire computers have been infected (Melissa, Klez etc. etc.). I still get the occational Klez-virus in my mailbox, but since my virus-scanner pickes them out I don't get infected. As of the last 24 hours I've gotten only 5 mails with the Sobig-virus, but if it ever reaches the "popularity" of Klez I can count on a few thousand more...

Update/install your virus-scanners people.

Freeware hint: Avast Ani-Virus - it's free for private individuals, and please check for automatic updates.

Viral update: Since Norway was hit particullary hard this time, the whole mail-system has been grinding to a halt. But the gates opened (for me at least) just now, and my mailbox was quickly filled with e-mail, whereof 80% was viralinfected, 10% automated warnings that I'm infected from e-mailsystems and 10% actual e-mail (iow business as usual)...

Election

It that time of year again, elections... It's local this time, but that doesn't stop the MNP's (Member of Norwegian Parliament) from hogging all the discussions, promoting what they will do if they get a majority in government. Hello! No matter what the election-results the places of parliament will not change, no matter how hard you try, it's local elections this year - your time is up in two years.

I've already voted, since I'll be in Scotland at the electionday, but to tell you the truth I haven't got the foggiest about who's up for election here in Oslo, and I don't think many people do - since it's mainly the MNP's who's faces are all over the papers and TV-screens. Just last night there was a televised debate on unenployment at schools, both are a matter of national policy and has absolutely nothing to do with the local election that are under way.

Better late than never

This week's Monday Mission is handed in a bit later than usual, since I was busy elsewhere at the time it came out.

1. Are you good at responding to emails and/or Blog comments?
Blog-comments are replied to through the blog, while I try to reply as quickly asd possible to e-mail. But if I have to think hard about my reply I tend to push it back in line, so that it can take a while.

2. Does it make you crazy when people won't reply to your emails even though you know good and well that they are reading them?
If I've sent an e-mail that contains a question of some sort, and the receiver don't reply within a short period of time, I can get quite cross (but no for long). If it's important I usually send off a small reminder.

3. I recently watched the FOX special "101 Things Removed from the Human Body" which was quite disgusting in a can't-help-but-watch kind of way. It got me to thinking about many of the accidents I had as a child. I remember climbing over a fence after T-ball and catching my palm on the top of the chain-link fence. Went through my hand and tore it right open. What's the most unusual thing you've had inside your body?
Only thing I can remember getting stuck in my body is a small piece of graphite from a pencil a classmate of mine stuck into my hand back in 8th grade (14yo), when she, for some reason or another, got extremely mad at me...

4. What person from your past would you most like to run into and visit with for an afternoon? Why them? What person would you like to not ever see again as long as you live? How come?
Hard one this... I actually can't think of anybody right now, for either of the questions...

5. What was the last bad meal you (or your special someone) paid too much for? What's the story there?
Got to think... Ah yes... It was a small Malayan restuarant in Gothenburg, Sweden. Me and a workmate was on a businesstrip and stopped in there at night to grab a bite to eat, both of us loving a bit of spicy food. The food eventually came and was absolutely tasteless. A especially bland sauce, last-grade meat, overcooked vegetables. Not a place I'll return to.

6. If out-of-the-blue you were forced to find a new career, if there was just suddenly no need for your field of expertise, just what job do you imagine you would seek out? Do you have any skills you can "fall back on?" (If you stay at home or are a student, adjust to fit your situation)
Well, the government is trying to eradicate my field so it's quite a valid question. I think I'd probably go into some sort of sales, since I fancy myself a salesman. I would very much like to start my own business, but the items I mostly would like to sell are under governmental control (whisky). Or maybe I'd go back to school for some time...

7. If you were to open up your own restaurant, what would it be called and what type of food would you serve? Describe the "feel" of the place (the decor, the music, etc).
It would most definently be a pub of some sort. With pub-grup meals and some specials in between. The decor would be more or less original, since I really don't like redecorating much. Music would be a mix of whatever I feel like (classical, pop, rock, blues etc), but absolutely no trance, dance, hip-hop or whatever passes for "in" these days.

Yeah for plums

The plums have arrived, finally. On my way home from work I passed a fruit-stall and saw them. I immediately purchased a kilo, and on my way home, a 10-15 minutes walk, about two-thirds of them had gone missing.

Hello, my name is Martin, and I'm a plumaholic. It all started when I was working in Olden, on the Norwegian west-coast, back in -99. This is just a bit north of the major area for fruitgrowth in Norway. So one day I fancied a few plums and bought some. From that day on until they were out of season I went through somewhere between around half a kilo and a kilo of plums daily. Eventually I've gotten control over my dependency, but ever so often I get the urge. Obey your urge...

You are now entering the EU

What a weekend....

We (that would be my girlfriend and I for those who haven't been paying attention) went off to Arvika, Sweden (again) this weekend. Just for a short trip, to pick up some packages that has arrived from the UK. Two from a shop in Scotland for the Whisky Society (No Mr. Customsman we don't know what's in those packages, but we're quite sure it's nothing illegal or restricted....right?), and my kilt.
Robin has on her site promised (threatened) to post pictures on me in it. I did acutally wear it on Saturday, it turned out to be some sort of festival in Arvika and the whole waterfront was packed. Somebody actually looked up my kilt (that's a first), but other that that it was just a whole lot of staring going on.

Action

A bus collided with a van just outside the window of the shop. Police are on site, maybe due to our close proximity to the US-embassy (24-hour police presence). Only material damage to the vehicles, luckily the bus hit a side beam on the van so the driver was safe.

Update: Now two ambulances has arrived on scene. Doesn't seem like anyboy's hurt, but the driver of the van has been taken into the back one of them. And the van-driver's boss has also arrived.

Course of events: A van came driving up the road and started turning left. This road has four lanes, whereof the two in the middle are bus/tram lanes. The bus has the right of way, but the van turned right into the path of the bus, and the impact was a fact. The bus rammed the van on the sidebare just behind the driver's seat, but at such a low speed (20kph?).

Mondays...

...are strange. Usually I have to drag my self up by the neck. But these last few weeks I've always been wide awake, and even more strange happy about it. Work's still a bit of a bother, but not for the same reasons as before. Why then this change, you ask? Well, I'm very much in love, for one. Luckily enough it's mutual. I've already met her fater and grandparents, but her mother remains - that could be interesting, especially when you think of her indifferent reaction to Robin mentioning me on the phone a few days ago (in Norwegian only).

More scary is the fact that in just a few weeks I'll be presenting her to my whole family. Why this scares me I don't know, because I just know they'll get along - just nerves I guess.

Just a little more work now (when I get done with this little piece) and then I'm off to Ikea to buy a new table to replace the one who's been tipping slitghtly for some time now, and on Sunday morning (during breakfast) lost two wheels. And the best part: Robin's going with me (PS! She's the one who actually likes to put together Ikea-packages! Would you belive it?).

Ranting on a Sunday

Back from a little walk around town to wake up and gt some fresh air. That wasn't easy... It seems there's a small boatrace in the Oslofjord today (Norwegian Grand Prix - Formula 1 for boats). I first heard the boats about 2-3 miles away, and I can tell you these boats make a LOT of noise. Why anybody would bother to go see them go around and around in the fjord I'll never know.

So... Yesterday I attended a party at Rolf's (treasurer at NMWL) together with Robin (out first public appearance with the NMWL-gang). Tasted a lot of good whisky (Port Eller 24yo, Ardbeg Lord of the Isles, Imperial 1979 etc.) and drank quite a bit too... So taking a cab home to my place we stumbeled up the stairs and quite quickly went to sleep. And too few hours later we woke up and had some breakfast. To prove I didn't expect overnight-company I was almost out of butter and almost nothing to put on the bread (except for some rasberryjam and muttonsalami). Some time later, after Robin had gone home and my headache was retreating, I went for my normal Sunday walk, only to be harassed by the high-pitched engine sound from the formula 1 boats.

On my way back I stopped by my local Bunnpris-shop (open every day), to buy some butter, amongst other things. The total payment due was 67,50 whereupon I gave the cashier 70 kroner. What happended then didn't really surprise me a whole lot. The cashier sat there counting it several times for about a minute, and looked like she was going to tell me I had to give her more money, before it suddenly dawned on her that I actually had gived her more than the amount due and while trying to laugh gave me my change. Is it any wonder that so many people think there's to little maths in the Norwegian education today?

Damn, and I need to get these dishes done today too...

To geek or not to geek...

It's Saturday and I'm at work. It would be worse but first, I've got a whole webradio for myself (Schlageradio) since it doesn't seem like anybody else is putting songs on the playlist I get to listen to want I want. Goodie, it's Nicole.

But since I have to do something I found this geek-quiz through Donna's site:

You are 35% geek
You are a geek liaison, which means you go both ways. You can hang out with normal people or you can hang out with geeks which means you often have geeks as friends and/or have a job where you have to mediate between geeks and normal people. This is an important role and one of which you should be proud. In fact, you can make a good deal of money as a translator.
Normal: Tell our geek we need him to work this weekend.

You [to Geek]: We need more than that, Scotty. You'll have to stay until you can squeeze more outta them engines!

Geek [to You]: I'm givin' her all she's got, Captain, but we need more dilithium crystals!

You [to Normal]: He wants to know if he gets overtime.

Elkjøp is a Norwegian electronics-chain who's mostly known for false advertising, incorrect salescampaignes and other not very nice things. On the road again...

It's Friday, and what else could you expect than the Friday Five. A travel-theme this time.

1. What's the last place you traveled to, outside your own home state/country?
That would be Arvika (Sweden), last weekend.

2. What's the most bizarre/unusual thing that's ever happened to you while traveling?
Actually come to think of it nothing very strange has ever happened to me during travel. Apart from the fact that everywhere I go I seem to stumble across some sort of holiday.

3. If you could take off to anywhere, money and time being no object, where would you go?
Scotland! But I would also fancy a trip to Alaska, Oceania and parts of Africa. Hmm... maybe my answer should be a round-the-world sailing trip?

4. Do you prefer traveling by plane, train or car?
All of the above. For speed I fly, for comfort the train and for flexibility and practicality there the car.

5. What's the next place on your list to visit?
A quick trip over to Arvika again (to pick up whisky for the whisky society and my kilt), then a week-end trip up north to Trondheim and Hitra followed in September by a trip to Scotland.

Not that I'm a sore looser or anything...

In preperation to our participation in The Autumn Speyside Whisky Festival Whisky Game in 50 days time, me and Robin got together to play The Whisky Game, since some of the questions in the competition comes from this game.

It ended with her beating me with one (1!) single point. not that I'm complaining, but she plays dirty. I won't go into details but she really is adept at breaking my concentration...

Body modification

I must say, an extremely body-fixated bunch of questions in this week's Wednesday What-If's.

1. What if you were offered the opportunity to have an operation that would increase your intelligence, but noticeably decrease your level of happiness?
They say ignorance is bliss... but since I'm quite pleased with the level of intelligence I've got, I would decline.

2. What if you had to choose between an operation that would leave you without hands, or an operation that would leave you with no feet?
No question, I'd ditch the feet.

3. What if you had to decide whether to risk your life and give a kidney to a dying relative whom you've never met, but whose kidneys match yours exactly?
A no-brainer. Please have my kidney.

4. What if you could have an operation that would allow you to morph into any animal at will, but would steal your ability of human speech?
That would be extremely fun, but it could get boring with time - so I think I'll just hang on to my vocal chords for the time being.

5. What if you could have an operation to change one thing about yourself -- what would it be?
Well, let's see... Nose, eyes, ears, chin, feet, fingers, arms, legs... No thanks. I've gotten used to my features over the last couple of decades, and since I'm not that big a supporter of selective surgery I'm going to stick my my body as it is thank you very much.

4.5 mth's to go

It's strange, but songs tend stick to your mind on the funniest of times. Since Sunday I've had a tune running in a very small loop inside my head and I've been humming along with it, without quite getting the grasp of it. Some of the words pop up from time to time, only to disapear when I attempt to decipher what song it is. But a recent msn-chat with Robin made it all clear.

1. When you take a vacation, do you ever suffer from Internet withdrawal? Or maybe the nagging urge to blog or read blogs? Or are you glad to be away?
Not really. I can go for long periods of time without the Internet available, but then again I've only been blogging for a few weeks.

2. Have you ever been "furloughed" (told to take time off work without pay) or laid off? How did that impact your family dynamics? Your finances? If not to you, have you seen it happen to anyone you know? How did they handle it?
There was a period I was "between" jobs where I lived off my savings. Had to cut back on a few things but I got through it.

3. If you fell on hard times, what is are some non-essential reoccurring luxury expenses (cable TV, TiVo subscription, cigarettes, high-speed net connection, newspaper, daily Starbucks coffee, etc.) you would give up to save money?
Cabel's included in my rent, don't have TiVo, don't smoke cigarettes (cigars and pipe on the other hand would have to go), internet-connection I've got at work and at public libraries, newspapers I read for free at the same places and I don't buy that much coffee in coffeeshops - so all of the above could easily be removed.

4. On the same thought, what is the one non-essential expense you would NOT give up?
Books!

5. Would you ever ask your family (parents, in-laws, relatives) for financial assistance? What would be some of your concerns about asking for help? Have you ever asked for it before? Did it go well?
If the situation became desperate I would ask my parents for money, but only as a last resort. Never had the need for it yet, hopefully never will.

6. Has a friend or relative ever borrowed money from you? Who were they and how much did they want? Did you ever get paid back, or did it matter? Did you feel compelled to keep an eye on them to see if they spent it wisely?
I've lended money to several friends and some relavtives (too many to count). I think I've gotten it all back (I can be absent minded at times). What they spend it on theire business.

7. Imagine you won a tax-free gift of $7,000. The only stipulation on the gift is that it must not be invested or saved, and must be spent before 2004. How would you use the money?
I guess I would have spent it on travel.

BONUS: Whatever happened to unity?
It probably went down the drain together with liberty and justice for all...

My Weekend by Martin

Well... I was going to write and tell you all about my week-end (as I told you on Friday), but now Robin's gone and written a very nice essay about the trip, so I won't bother telling the whole story, you can just as easy read it on Robin's website.

But I can embellish her story just a bit.

First off we went to a small place outside Konsvinger to visit her grandparents, and her father was there. Now this is a situation a guy can get nervous. But thanks to her, and the fact that her father is a really pleasant guy the whole affair was no trouble whatsoever.

Next we were on the road again and reached Arvika where she guided me through the streets like a local. I drove up to the appartementbuilding Linda lived in and we went in and had a night cap (Cadenhead's Ord 19yo) before turning in.

Day two - shopping
First and foremost we went alcohol-shopping. But in between there also was time for other things. To tell you the truth I can think of a few things I like better than shopping (a whole lot of thing to be honest), fortunately Robin is less inclined to go on a shopping-spree than most people of the female persuasion I know (just one of the things I like about her). And then off to the lake-party.

Day three - homewardbound
Not the most eventful day (it was just as well), got up a bit too early, pizza for lunch and then off for the local museum for some cultural enlightenment (many good pieces) and coffee and buns. After that we stacked the car with our bags and alcohol and went shopping for foodstuffs (can't go to Sweden without buying some Falukorv).
Nothing much happened on the way back, no getting arrested for bringing to much alcohol in to Norway or anything. Coming back to Oslo the worst part of the trip came - carrying several litres of drink (in glass bottles) up the stairs to the 4th floor is no fun.

But all in all a truly lovely weekend.

A good day to die

I don't know why I did it, but I just remembered it's been a long time since I checked when I'll die. So off to Deathclock.com to find out.

And the results are in... Saturday, April 24th, 2049.

Norwegians only

It's quite a few years since I last saw this page, but it's still hilarious. It's Norsk Språkråds (the Norwegian Language Council) computer dictionary Or futile attempts at making Norwegian words for computer-lingo. Much fun.

On the road again

Aahh..just two more hours work. And then I'm off for the weekend. Me and my girlfriend are going to Arvika (Sweden). Do they really belive I'll do top grade work this close to the weekend.

And visiting the Bruichladdich-website also made we longing for a dram. If you decide ot visit the site, please remeber to turn the sound on your computer on - it plays a lovely little tune.

There are mad people out there

How twisted can you get?
A 29 year old man was found tied up on a bench in a park in Bergen, Norway last night. The police went to investigate reports on a inanimate man who was tied up, but upon arriving they found a very alert 29 year old man who had a bag full of pornographic movies and a sincere wish to be raped.
Being sober the man was released and told by the police to go home.

Rise and Shine

An early morning selection of questions in this week's Friday Five.

1. What time do you wake up on weekday mornings?
Usually my alarmclock goes off somewhere between 7 and 8 o'clock.

2. Do you sleep in on the weekends? How late?
I try, belive me I try. But as a rule I wake up aromund 9 or 10.

3. Aside from waking up, what is the first thing you do in the morning?
Turn off the alarmclock, go to the bathroom, shave, shower, coffee...

4. How long does it take to get ready for your day?
That's depending on if I've overslept or not. If I'm running late it takes me about 5 minutes, otherwise around half an hour.

5. When possible, what is your favorite place to go for breakfast?
Well I have discovered this little cafe called Santa Monica Lunsjbar about 15 minutes walk away from me that's promising. But mainly I just eat at home.
